Recently the City adopted new rules that allow a wider variety of housing options for its residents.

Included in these new rules are more flexible standards for building Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), sometimes referred to mother-in-law suites or granny flats. ADUs are additional housing units on the same lot with an existing house, either in a basement, attic, garage, new addition or completely unattached from the main house in the rear or side yard.

In order to help our residents learn more about adding an ADU to their property, we are partnering with Metro to hold a FREE workshop.

This FREE ADU workshop is for anyone interested in ADUs- including homeowners considering building an ADU on their property and builders interested in new rules. For most homeowners, building an ADU is not as simple or straightforward as building a new fence or deck--it’s essentially the job of being a land developer--- a job that most of us have never done.

This workshop will help you understand, and be prepared for, the ADU design, permitting, management, and building process, to help you save time and money and build a better product that will work for your situation.

Schedule

  • Introduction-Understanding ADUs
  • Market context for ADU Development
  • Permitting- development regulations, process
  • Costs, Financing, Property taxes
  • Design/build process, Cost-saving Design/build Measures, Contracts, Building Rebates
  • Further Resources (packet including contract types, sample plans, budget sample etc).
  • Q&A available throughout

I am wondering if the new rules and regulations require the owner of a property who is considering building an ADU on their property to reside in either the ADU or the original structure? Regards Mike

Mike asked almost 5 years ago

Thanks for your question. Owner occupancy is not required.

The requirement for owner occupancy of either the primary or accessory unit was removed as part of a code amendment package in late 2018.

How much of this seminar will also apply to Portland or Multnomah County? Also, will dinner have any sugar-free options? Thanks!!

Brendan Hutchins asked almost 5 years ago

Hello, thanks for your interest. This workshop will focus specifically on development of an ADU in Tigard. While there will be some general content, the rules and process will be different in Portland and Multnomah County, so you would probably be better served by localized content provided by a workshop in one of those jurisdictions.
