Fanno Creek Trail Alignment Study
Estudio de alineación de senderos de Fanno Creek
This project is looking for the best route from Bonita Road to the Tualatin River for what will be the last segment of the Fanno Creek Trail in Tigard.
What We Heard
At an open house last fall, we heard the following criteria were important.
- User Experience*
- Environmental Impacts
- Constructability & Funding
- Property Ownership
- Safety & Security*
- Community Support
*=Most important criteria
What We Did
Technical analysis and field surveys are now complete. Based on the criteria above, the options have been narrowed in each segment. In some cases, we were able to eliminate it down to one option. In others, there are still choices about where the trail could go.
Learn more about the trade offs for each segment.
What's Next
We want to hear about what options have the most community support. The goal of this project is to narrow the options down to a point that the city can apply for design and construction grants.
Take the survey and help us determine the best route.

Segment A: Bonita Road

Click to view the detailed map.
The northernmost trail segment starts at the existing Bonita Road crossing at the intersection of Milton Court. The trail follows Fanno Creek to the riparian greenspace referred to as Bonita Natural Area. Due to the limited undeveloped space along Fanno Creek, this segment may impact properties on either side of the creek.
Heading south from Bonita Road, the following three alignment options are under evaluation:
1: The trail is located on the west side of Fanno Creek, on the Bonita Villa Apartment property. The project team is considering how the trail could be located along the bank without requiring the removal of parking. This option has one bridge over the creek.
2: The trail is located on the east side of Fanno Creek along an industrial property parking lot and then into the creek corridor. The project team is considering how the trail could be located along the bank without requiring the removal of parking. This option has two bridges crossing Fanno Creek.
3: The trail is located along the east side industrial property for a longer distance and crosses over Ball Creek. Compared to Option 2, this option stays on the industrial property for a longer distance, but has less floodplain impacts and one less bridge.
South of options 1 through 3 described above, the trail alignment traverses a large open space which is a potential location for floodplain and wetland restoration. This section has great views and connections to nature for trail users. A long boardwalk section allows the landscape to function hydraulically while providing a positive user experience.
The southern part of this segment crosses the creek and enters a forested section of the corridor providing an interesting contrast to the trail experience to the north.
As shown in purple, this segment includes additional trails to provide access to the Fanno Creek Trail for maintenance access and neighborhood connections.Alternatives Analysis

Segment B: Gentle Woods

This section follows the creek through wooded areas and wetlands with two distinct alignment options for the route. The options are predicated by the feasibility of the trail alignment along the creek to the south as described in Segment C.
4: The trail follows the creek corridor and then turns west into a residential neighborhood to connect to SW 76th Avenue. Due to the width of the public right-of-way, the trail in this section shares the street with vehicles as shown. This route could be an interim solution if the project is built is sections, or it could be the primary route if the route 5 alignment south along the creek is not feasible. If this route is not the preferred alignment, it presents a good neighborhood connector trail and emergency access route.
5: This alignment option follows the creek, mostly navigating around a large wetland with great views of the creek and user experience of the landscape.

Segment C: Durham Road

This trail segment is a continuation of option 4 or 5 described above in Segment B.
4: This alignment option follows SW 76th Avenue within the public right-of-way as shown to SW Durham Road. This trail segment along the north side of the street is a multi-use trail within the SW Durham Road public right-of-way as shown to the intersection at SW 79th Avenue where it crosses at the existing traffic signal.
5. This trail alignment option is within the creek corridor and located on the east side of the creek to not impact the higher quality wetlands, vegetation, and large trees that are on the west side of the creek. The trail crosses under the Durham Road bridge over Fanno Creek and gently climbs up to the SW Durham Road public right-of-way where it would become a multi-use trail on the south side of the roadway until reaching SW 85thth Avenue.
West of options 4 and 5, the trail follows Durham Road along the south side of the street on a separated multi-use path as shown. As the trail approaches the intersection of SW 85th Avenue it meanders into the open space at the Clean Water Services treatment plant administrative building to offer more separation between the path and road.

The southernmost trail segment turns south along SW 85th Avenue and continues along the Clean Water Services treatment plant frontage as an off street, multi-use path as shown. Once past the dead end at the end of the street near the RV dump station, the trail would connect to the new trail that is part of the Fanno Creek Trail Connections project.
